About Tayside Planetarium

Tayside Planetarium is a mobile planetarium business founded in 2022 by Matt Williamson.

We deliver memorable STEM education experiences to schools across Tayside, Fife, and Aberdeenshire. We also offer shows for other organisations, such as uniformed groups and other community groups, as well as events and private functions.

How does a portable planetarium work? The planetarium is a dome-shaped fabric structure, inflated by a powerful fan. Audiences come in through a zipped door in the side. Once you’re inside, the fan runs whisper quiet and you can marvel at the scene that is projected onto the inside of the dome. Your presenter will show you beautiful and often mind-boggling things – in fact we can look at pretty much any object in the Universe! If you’d like Tayside Planetarium to come to your venue, please look at our venue requirements before making your booking.

Matt Williamson

Matt is the founder and lead presenter of Tayside Planetarium. Matt is a science communicator who has devoted the last decade to chatting with young people about science. He has a degree in chemistry and physics, but more important than having letters after his name is his belief that there is no such thing as a silly question. In the past, Matt has worked for science centres, observatories, and planetariums, in Newcastle and Edinburgh. In that time, he has performed countless shows, met an astronaut or two, and fallen ever more deeply in love with the night sky.

VAT registration number available upon request. All of our presenters are members of the PVG Scheme.
The business is fully insured against equipment loss and has suitable Public Liability Insurance.
Tayside Planetarium is a member of the British Association of Planetaria.
